What is Biodynamic Farming?
Biodynamic farming is the oldest organic farming method in the world, advocated by Austrian thinker Rudolf Steiner.
It is said that the power of the universe flows into the earth by applying various preparations made from natural herbs, minerals, and livestock (cow dung, horns, and entrails) to maintain a healthy balance of soil and plants, without using any chemical pesticides or fertilizers.
The agricultural calendar is based on the position of the earth in relation to the sun, moon, and planets, and the sowing, harvesting, and other farming activities are carried out according to the movements of the heavenly bodies.
What is biodynamic wine?
Biodynamic wine is wine made from grapes grown by biodynamic farming. Biodynamic farming is a holistic approach to agriculture based on anthroposophy, a philosophy founded by Austrian philosopher and scientist Rudolf Steiner in the early 1920s that views the farm as an organism.
Natural winemakers realize that only organic or biodynamic grapes possess the characteristics necessary to withstand natural winemaking methods. Only healthy, pure grapes can be transformed into natural wine through a non-interventionist approach without causing problems along the line.
What is organic wine (biologic wine)?
Organic wine is wine made from organically grown grapes. Organic farming is a type of alternative to conventional agriculture that focuses on sustainability.
Definition of Organic Wine in the U.S.
Before a wine can be sold as organic, both the cultivation of the grapes and their conversion to wine must be certified. This includes growing grapes without synthetic fertilizers and in a way that protects the environment and conserves soil.
Other agricultural ingredients in the wine, such as yeast, must also be certified organic. All non-agricultural ingredients must be clearly permitted on the national list of permitted and prohibited substances and cannot exceed 5% of the total product.
In addition, sulfur dioxide (sulfites), which wines naturally produce, cannot be added to organic wines."
Only wines produced according to USDA-established principles, including the strict requirement that "no sulfur dioxide be added," can be sold as organic wine. If a wine only meets the requirement that it be "made from organic grapes," it cannot be sold as organic wine.
European Union Definition of Organic Wine
In the European Union, organic wine must be made from organic grapes. It must also follow the following winemaking practices, which can be found on the European Commission's website
►For red wines, the maximum sulfite content set at 100 mg per liter (150 mg / l for conventional)
►For white/rosé wines, the maximum sulfite content set at 150 mg / l (200 mg / l for conventional).
If the residual sugar content exceeds 2 g per liter, there is a difference of 30 mg / l.
Within the European Union, for a wine to be labeled and sold as organic, the amount of sulfur dioxide must be less than that found in conventional wines, but the addition is not prohibited.
